Hello everyone! Last week I turned in an illustration as part of the monthly SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators) contest. The theme was “Oops.” I was secretly hoping I’d win so I could brag all about it here. I did not win.
I thought the illustration was pretty good. (And I’ll post it at the bottom of this email so you can also see how good it is.) I know that judging illustrations is subjective. But I heard something on the Island of Brilliant podcast October 1st, 2023 episode with
that really resonated with me. Around the 13 minute mark, he said, “When you’ve been lost for a while like that [with] something that you’re trying to make, even when you you think you’ve got it, you’ve hit so many dead ends and false starts that you’re a little bit beat up. You don’t know whether to trust your excitement.”I’m starting to have trouble trusting my excitement and I’m not quite sure how to regain that trust.
A Few Obsessions From This Week
With the rise of ChatGPT and other AI, it feels like we are living the beginning of the Terminator movies. In that same vein, here are some robot themed songs I’ve been thinking about this week.
Every time I do a reCAPTCHA, the chorus to the Marina and the Diamonds song, I Am Not A Robot plays in my head.
A playful reimagining of the Terminator, Robots, comes from the one and only Flight of the Conchords. I especially like the part of the song where a robot becomes self aware to their own hypocrisy. The partial music video from their show can be found seen here.
