Extra Extra, Read All About It
ISSUE 148: Some Really Great News This Week!
Hi everyone! I’ve got some fun news to share this week. I submitted a piece of art to Gallery Nucleus’s Power In Numbers show… and it was accepted! See the painting and more information about it at the bottom of the email. A big thank you to Liz Rose who was the reason I even knew that submissions were open.
I feel like the theme of my life lately “is getting ready to get lucky.” I’ve been preparing a long time for an unknown something, so that when it shows up I’m ready for it. I’m pretty sure that something is getting a children’s book published. That means researching agents, preparing dummy books, writing scripts. I’ve been immersing myself in Ann Whitford Paul’s book Writing Picture Books and reading all the picture books I can. (Thank goodness for our local library!) I don’t know where I’ll land, but having the painting accepted makes me feel like I’m stepping in the right direction.
A Few Obsessions From This Week
Some favorite picture books we’ve read this week are Matthew Forsythe’s Pokko and the Drum. We also like Lemony Snicket’s The Bad Mood and the Stick, which was illustrated by Matthew Forsythe.
I’ve really have been enjoying Felicita Sala’s children’s book illustrations.
This piece is called Bullfrog Brand Fly-Catcher. It is a product I made up, then painted to look like a still life. It’s done with watercolor, colored pencils, and pastel pencils. The painting is 5x7 inches and will be available at Gallery Nucleus on June 28th at their Power in Numbers 2025 show.
